THE WAY I SEE IT
By Michael Collins
.An innocuous story in The Washington Post about a recent rather comic political brouhaha in the little town of Seat Pleasant, Md. — just outside the nation’s capital — brings to mind a much-talked about Internet rumor of some years ago that captured the attention of patriots and others around the globe.
The claim — still very much alive on the worldwide web — was that U.S. intelligence spirited Adolf Hitler out of Germany at the end of World War II and that, for years, Hitler lived at a secret U.S. military installation in a national forest — somewhere out West — finally dying at age 114 in 2004 in a nursing home in, of all places, Seat Pleasant, Md.
When I first heard the story I commented that had I known the fuehrer had been in residence there — not too many miles from where I live — I would have gone to visit him. Alas, however, I never got the chance to do so — because the story just wasn’t true.
But there are still many today who — having heard the scenario — believe it (almost religiously) to be true. After all, they say, they heard it from a self-described “patriot.”
Now, all of this doesn’t preclude the possibility — however unlikely — that Hitler survived the war. A handful of reasonably credible people believe Hitler didn’t die in his bunker in Berlin and somehow escaped the hands of the Allied butchers at the war’s end. There are some interesting (though often contradictory) stories that seemingly underscore that claim — the emphasis being on the word “seemingly.”
But if Hitler did manage to make his way out of Berlin, it’s a pretty solid bet he didn’t live out his life on American soil and end up dying in dear little Seat Pleasant.
Regardless of this, for a period of years while doing a nightly Internet broadcast I was perpetually bombarded with inquiries by callers about Hitler’s days in Seat Pleasant and when I repeatedly insisted this silly tale should be dismissed on its face, I was angrily accused by some of being a “government agent” who was “trying to cover up the truth” that Hitler’s death in 1945 was a “hoax.”
The infusion of so much nonsense — crafted out of the whole cloth — into the truth movement left many good people confused.
It sometimes seemed as if some audacious con artist could come along and — in the name of “truth” — broadcast two hours of the sound of barking dogs and announce this was the latest “revelation” about some secret aspect of history and that many people would inexplicably sit in rapt attention, listening to every bark and howl, and then turn to a disbelieving friend and, with a wink and a nod, say, “Nyuh-huh, that’s the real story they’re covering up.”
Is it any wonder a lot of otherwise open-minded people don’t believe the real truth when they are confronted with it? Is it any wonder that when responsible voices for truth such as AMERICAN FREE PRESS seek to set the record straight that critics have a field day condemning AFP for allegedly purveying “conspiracy theories”?
The moral to the story is that, despite everything, there do exist some important and valuable resources for serious truth seekers and AFP is in the forefront among them. And that’s why you need to do everything you can to help keep AMERICAN FREE PRESS in print.
