. Defenders of the Second Amendment area again standing up to counter an ongoing propaganda campaign advocating new gun control legislation.
In connection with the first anniversary of the Sandy Hook incident — 20 children and six adults were reportedly shot dead — the mass media predictably unleashed another torrent of hype agitating for more measures to curtail firearm ownership.
However, thanks to serious, fact-based research and articulate enunciation of the data, voices such as John Lott at the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) have been forceful opponents of the gun grabbers.
Lott slapped down gun grabbers with a recent documented report demonstrating that “every place that guns have been banned, murder rates have gone up,” noting that “you cannot point to one place where [the murder rate] has fallen [after guns have been banned] whether it’s Chicago or D.C. or even island nations such as England, Jamaica or Ireland.”
After the British ban in 1997, there was roughly a 50% increase in homicide rates and, although that spike has since subsided, the homicide rate in England still remains higher than it was immediately prior to the ban.
Average Americans undecided on the gun issue are not convinced to oppose gun control by Internet rumors that “no kids died at Sandy Hook,” or that “crisis actors” posed as parents of children who died. Instead, the kind of hard data and logical arguments — utilized by Lott and other strategically focused opponents of gun control — resonate with average, commonsense Americans.
While Barack Obama’s so-called grassroots political machine — Organizing for Action (OFA) — has pushed, in particular, for expanded background checks on those who purchase firearms at gun shows or online, Lott notes that background checks being pushed by OFA would not have prevented the Sandy Hook tragedy.
In fact, Lott noted, the weapons allegedly used by the gunman, Adam Lanza, had been legally purchased by his mother and — even under the terms of an Obama-supported gun control bill in the Senate — those purchases still would be legal.
The media tries to stampede people into supporting the evisceration of the Second Amendment, but effective defenders of the right to keep and bear arms target the core issue and don’t get sidetracked.
That’s why AFP is proud to support those who take a strong stand on this important matter.
