. Upon returning to Washington from the AFP VETERANS DAY WEEKEND FREE SPEECH CONFERENCE in Austin on Nov. 10, the AFP staff was shocked to learn of the tragic death, that day, of Reginald “Reg” Orem, a personal friend and supporter of AFP and its staff.
A frequent visitor to the AFP office, where he often did volunteer writing, editing and proofreading for the newspaper, Reg died in an accidental early-morning fire that raged through his home in College Park,Md. Fortunately, Reg’s devoted wife, Edith, escaped. She was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns.
A familiar, friendly face to attendees of nationalist- oriented focus groups in the Washington area, Reg regularly provided AFP and others with important research material. A longtime supporter of political maverick David Duke, Reg helped proofread Duke’s classic, My Awakening.
A multifaceted intellectual, the scion of distinguished Maryland families who were involved in publishing and public affairs, the 82-year-old Orem — whose vitality and enthusiasm belied his years — was a classic Renaissance man. A former teacher, Reg was the author of eight books on education-related topics, but his interests were legion. Over the years, among his personal friends were such eminent international figures as Nobel laureate William Shockley and visionary inventor Buckminister Fuller.
Survived by Edith, two sons, one daughter, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Reg will be fondly remembered in his own community where he was active in civic affairs and long deeply engaged as a respected member of his church.
AFP’s Pete Papaherakles — a very close friend of Reg — spoke for AFP and for all who knew him — when reflecting on the loss of this valued behind-the-scenes (but influential) figure in the nationalist movement:
“Reg was a class act — a ‘one-of-kind.’ We will not see his likes again in a long, long time.”
